BELGIAN MYSQL, MARIADB and friends COMMUNITY DINNER – FRIDAY 2 February 2024

This year, for the first time in like forever, MySQL, MariaDB and Friends, will not have a dedicated Devroom at FOSDEM. (snif) Luckily that did not prevent the MySQL team to still host the Belgian MySQL Days (formerly known as the pre-FOSDEM MySQL Days). And thus we still have the opportunity to bring the community together to socialize and exchange idea’s over a Belgian beer or a glass of wine.

We continue the by now well known tradition of dining together in style with members from all over the community, and invite you to the ICAB venue (the same location as where the Belgian MySQL days are being held).

Book your tickets now!!!

The listed ticket price includes a selection of Belgian Speciality Beers and food, which will be typical Belgian style.

If you have any dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free,…) please let us know ahead of time when buying the ticket as we need to inform the caterer who wil make the necessary accommodations for you.

FOSDEM 2023 MySQL Devroom – extra info

Hi all,

As you know the CfP for the devroom has been open and you may have noticed that we have only half a day that we also need to share.

Therefore, we will have only 4 sessions and they should look like this:

We didn’t decide yet which of the two colors will be for which project.

Due to the very low number of sessions, we will not attempt to compose a selection committee.

Managing a committee to find the candidates, collect their decisions, communicate and especially ask for votes (and yes often these are very busy people) is a time consuming process.

For the committee, reviewing the proposed sessions is a lengthy procedure and agreeing on 16 sessions is already very complicated so only for 4…

However, you may have also noticed that there will be two pre-FOSDEM MySQL days. We will check the proposed FOSDEM MySQL Devroom session to see if there is any content that could be presented at these pre-FOSDEM MySQL days. I will then contact the speakers and invite them.

Don’t forget to submit inspiring sessions, we look forward to reading them !

See you soon in Belgium !

FOSDEM 2023 MariaDB, MySQL and Friends Devroom – Call for Papers

Now that FOSDEM is again going to held in-person event, MariaDB and MySQL will once again have a devroom.

FOSDEM 2023 will take place on Sat 4 – Sun 5 February 2023.

However, there are some changes in the organization. Each project will be responsible for its track, so we will divide the devroom into two sub-tracks.

For the convenience of the speakers and participants, we will not mix the two sub-tracks.

You will have the possibility to follow the track you are interested in, or of course both

The other big change is that the devroom is only half a day. This will make talk selection
very complicated as MariaDB and MySQL will only have 4 sessions each !

The MariaDB, MySQL & Friends devroom will be held for half a day, probably on Sunday afternoon.

The MariaDB track will also be holding a virtual event, which will take place outside of the physical devroom times. This will be similar to last year, where a video presentation will have to be prepared well in advance of the physical event.

FOSDEM 2022 MySQL devroom schedule updated !

Hello,

Due to a complete misunderstanding about the available slots, FOSDEM’s organization had to remove 2 talks from the previous planned agenda.

However, we didn’t want to announce to previously accepted speakers that their talks were cancelled ! Therefore, we decided, with FOSDEM’s approval, to extend the FOSDEM 2022 MySQL Devroom, opening our room on Saturday afternoon.

Two talks were then moved to Saturday and the two backup talks were immediately added to the schedule !

More work for us and our speakers but more pleasure for all the MySQL fans !

Don’t miss FOSDEM MySQL Devroom’s 2022 edition, free online conference.

Here is the new updated schedule (the official one is available here):

The time scheduled might still change but those are the accepted talks. We can see that backups are still a hot topic such as High Availability.

Kubernetes is also a trending topic.

Shlomi will deliver something new and we will also have a new type of talk with Daniel presenting his book on MySQL Performance.

Don’t miss FOSDEM 2022 MySQL Devroom on February 6th.

FOSDEM 2022 – MySQL DevRoom Call for Papers

We received today the notification for FOSDEM’s organization that the MySQL DevRoom is accepted for the 2022’s edition !

The MySQL DevRoom will take place on February 6th, 2022. It’s a Sunday. Like previous edition, FOSDEM will be an online event.

Due to the very short deadlines, this year an external committee cannot be created to validate, sort and vote for the proposed talks.

We will propose the best agenda respecting the ideas and precepts that have made our MySQL DevRoom one of the most popular room of FOSDEM for so many years.

The MySQL Developer room focuses on MySQL and its Ecosystem.

The call for papers for the MySQL DevRoom is now officially open !

Same rules as last year:

  • For obvious reasons, this year the event will not take place in a physical location but online.
  • The reference time will be Brussels local time (CET).
  • Talks will be pre-recorded, and streamed during the event – Before proposing a session, please make sure you will have the facilities (camera, microphone, network) and time to prepare, upload and review a recording during the first two weeks of January if your proposal is accepted.
  • Q&A session will be live after your talk.
  • A platform will be provided for people watching to join a common chat.
  • A platform will be provided for people watching to submit questions.

These rules may change as they are not yet confirmed by FOSDEM’s organization.

Key dates:

Because creating such event is not easy, because of the indecisive situation, etc… we are now bound by time.

  • Submission deadline: 31st December 2021
  • Announcement of selected talks: as soon as possible
  • Submission of recorded talks: to be determined
  • Devroom date: Sunday 6th February 2022

How to submit:

For this edition, we decided to have a mix of sessions. We are accepting talks of 15, 25 and 40 minutes, with time for questions afterward. The Q&A session will be live. Please, don’t forget to specify the duration in your submission.

You might be aware that the usual standard length for MySQL Devroom is 25 minutes and the majority of accepted talks will certainly be in that range but we are open to exception (explain why in your submission).

All submissions have to be made in the Pentabarf event planning tool:
penta.fosdem.org/submission/FOSDEM22

Submit now() :D

While creating your proposal, please provide the title of your talk, a short abstract, some information about yourself (eg. name, bio, photo, contact information, but remember that your profile might be already stored in Pentabarf).

It’s very important that you select the right track “MySQL devroom” and don’t forget to specify the duration.

And as usual, marketing and sales speeches are not welcome. Please focus on the engineering side, the operations and of course the developers. We want to hear how you are hacking MySQL and develop around it !

Recording of Talks:

The talks in the MySQL developer room as in other rooms must be pre-recorded.

Speakers have to submit a recording of their talk to the devroom in Pentabarf (if the talk is accepted and when recorded, not during the proposal) and be available for Q&A during the event.

By participating in the event you agree to the publication of your recordings, slides and other content provided under the same license as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY).

In the “Submission notes” field in Pentabarf, please indicate that you agree to the publications.

For example: “If my speech is accepted for FOSDEM MySQL Devroom, I agree to the publication of my recordings, slides provided under the same license as all FOSDEM content (CC-BY). Sincerely, Name”.

Thank you, and see you soon virtually during FOSDEM 2022 ! Don’t wait too much and submit as soon as possible.

FOSDEM 2022

Hi all, just some words to let you know that FOSDEM’22 will take place February 5th and 6th. Like last year, this 2022 edition will be an online edition.

As MySQL, we have submitted our candidature for a devroom/track. We are waiting for the approval list.

As soon as we know FOSDEM’s decision, the eventual Call-For-Papers will be opened.

Stay tuned.

Meanwhile, enjoy MySQL !

FOSDEM 2021 MySQL Devroom Schedule

The FOSDEM 2021 MySQL Devroom Schedule is now online.

Thank you again to all who submitted a talk and thank you the to Committee for having build such agenda.

It seems that once again, MySQL Operations and Architecture are very popular.

As you probably know already, this event will be totally online this year.

I would like to thanks the people who were able to jump after some cancellations… virtual events are not the most popular for speakers.

The MySQL Devroom will take place Sunday February 7th form 10AM to 6PM CEST.
